 A little under two years ago, we set out to interview more than 150 people in their twenties and thirties in order to find out how they were faring as they set out to get paid to do good. We found a foundation to support us, we hired staff, we held focus groups, and we read everything we could that was written on the simple question that seemed to be on everyone's mind: How do you make money and change the world?

The results came in and we put them into a free e-book that has been downloaded thousands of times. In doing all this, and in hearing the stories of people that read the e-book, we realized one thing—the e-book was only the beginning. Today we are writing a full-length book on the subject and we are uncovering even more stories, examples, and strategies that are actually helping people get jobs. Below are five trends from our research:

Finding your Green Job

How do you you make money and change the world? That was the question that the folks at DreamNow asked themselves, and it resulted in a book. Occupation: Change the World addresses a conundrum that many people, especially people in their twenties and thirties, face. They want a job that engages their values, but they also want to be able to support themselves, ideally in way that they don't have friends and family constantly asking: "So when are you going to get a real job?"

It seems easy enough to move from volunteer work to low-paying work for non-profits. But for those who hope to raise a family, or simply want to have enough resources to pursue other world changing passions, this is a live issue.

Occupation: Change the World is freely downloadable (licenced CC by-nc-nd), so you can read it yourself. It's a quick flip, well-designed for on-screen reading, and you can probably easily make it through the book in half an hour. At seventy pages, it can only scratch the surface of a deep and complicated subject, however it has plenty of pointers to further reading, and offers some provocative take-aways.

Job: Causeway Social Finance

Social Innovation Generation @ MaRs

The Deal: This is a job that is placed at the heart of social entrepreneurship activity in Canada. The job entails being involved in a project called Causeway which is working to build a social finance infrastructure in Ontario and Canada. This simply means finding ways to fund and invest in things that do good. The job would be run and hosted out of MaRs in Toronto and pays between $41-51000/ year for a two year term. 

+ DreamNow: We have mentioned MaRs before as they helped support the launch of Occupation: Change the World and have played a pretty central role in the development of social enterprise here in Canada. They are a small but committed team that is doing great work. The job would put you in the center of it all in terms of social enterprise funding in Canada. Causeway is also a key component of socialfinance.ca which was started with the help of our friend Karim Harij.

The Deal: Apathy is Boring is based in Montreal and works on youth and democracy issues. They just moved into a new storefront office and are now hiring a full time Development Coordinator to help raise money, manage staff and develop some organizational capacity. There ED is great and it would be a great place to work. 

+ DreamNow: Apathy is Boring is a close partner of DreamNow's. We were started around the same time and have sort of grown-up together. Recently we started actually working together helping them do some work following up from the youth dialouges that they help Canada's Governor General run. There will probably be one coming to a city close to you so get ready and apply for this job.
