Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund

The Deal - The Davis-Putter scholarship fund provides grants to students working for peace and justice. If you are active on your campus in the United States running, advocating or generally standing up for issues then this is a chance to get some money to pay for schooling. Grants are for both graduate and undergraduate students with the maximum grant being $8000.

YouthActionNet: Global Fellowship

The Deal: YouthActionNet helps to connect and support young social entrepreneurs from around the world. In addition to their online marketplace they have a fellowship for founders between 18-29. The fellowship enables one to reach a network of international NGO's and Corporate Partners and travel all-expense-paid to Washington DC for a 7 day summit. Past awardees have included the founder of Souktel and Emerge Global among a wide list of others.

Award: Brower Youth Award

Earth Island Institute
Deadline: May 15^th 2010

The Deal: The Brower Youth Awards are given to six young environmental leaders each year from the ages of  13 to 22.  In addition to the award, you receive $3000 dollars in cash, a week-long trip to San Francisco,  training, access to media, contacts and a chance to present your work at the Bioneers Conference. This is a great opportunity for all individuals between the ages of 13 - 22 living in North America.

+ DreamNow: We first connected with the Brower Youth Award team at the Bioneers Conference three years ago. They are a great group and do a really good job providing support and recognition to youth leaders in the environmental movement. Several of our friends have won over the years and they all have great things to say-- from the speaking engagements to the award ceremony itself. 

Fellowships: Deshpande Innovators Challenge

The Deal: An interesting twist on the volunteer abroad model the Deshpande Foundation has various fellowships for individuals that want to work in the 'sandbox region' of India. They are partnered with Ashoka and have identified nine key issues in the region and if you propose a solution they will fund you to travel to India and implement the project with your team. They also have shorter term and area specific opportunities. It is an interesting blend of funding for start-up social enterprises and travel abroad experiences.

+ DreamNow:   Friends of ours from the Sierra Youth Coalition have won this award in the past and we have had the chance to attend and work with the Bioneers folks a few years ago. The award is an amazing opportunity and has had several Canadian winners in the past.

Fellowship: Pop!Tech Social Innovation Fellows

The Deal: The Pop!Tech Conference happens yearly and is a TED-like conference for social innovators. They choose 15 Social Innovation Fellows each year who receive both an all-expense-paid development program run by well-networked industry leaders and the chance to present and pitch their projects at the annual Pop!Tech Conference to media and a network of people that range from Imogen Heap to Van Jones.

+ DreamNow: One of our friends, Abby Falik, was a fellow in 2008 for her program Global Citizen Year. Things have really taken off for Abby in the last year a lot of which can be tracked back to her experience at the Pop!Tech conference—proof that it works.  We became friends with Abby in 2004 when we were both fellows at the Oxfam IYP conference another great one to check out.

Opportunity: Youth Action Net Awards

Youth Action Net

^{The Deal:  It is open to young people 18-29 who are the founders of a social change project or organization.  Twenty of the top projects will be selected to this ‘fellowship’ of sorts. You are brought together in Washington DC all expense paid with 20 other young people, are given training, gain access to funding and gain access to a tremendous network of other young changemakers around the world.}

+ DreamNow: We have heard only great things about the program from our friends at Otesha who were fellows in 2005. The program has been running since 2003.
