The Deal: Resource Generation has a big impact in peoples lives. They work with young people with privilege to help them mobilize their resources for social change. This means they help young people think about giving, philanthropy, family foundations, and all that is tied up in race/class/privilege around these issues. They are offering an internship for 15 hours per week for 5 months in their New York office. Interns are offered a $750 stipend for their commitment. 

+ Dreamnow: DreamNow is represented on the board of RG and is helping advise the group on how they are dealing with their alumni. We can also highly recommend their book Classified by Karen Pittelman the founder of RG as a great place to start when looking into what it means to have class privilege. Check it out and work with them-- we would.

Job: Athletes for Africa, Communication + Fundraising Positions

Athletes for Africa

The Deal: Athletes for Africa is most well known for their yearly Gulu Walk which raises awareness about the night commutes of children in Northern Uganda. They also run yearly fundraiser/awareness building events such as soccer tournaments with indie rockstars from the likes of Broken Social Scene and Weezer competing against people like Michael Cera--- an all around good time. Currently they are looking for both a communications specialist and fundraising professional. The positions are based in Toronto.

+ DreamNow: Athletes for Africa is run by a friend of DreamNow's named Adrian Bradbury. We met him through the Walter and Duncan Gordon Foundation when he was named a Gordon Global Fellow in 2006.

Fellowships: Deshpande Innovators Challenge

Deshpande Foundation

The Deal: An interesting twist on the volunteer abroad model the Deshpande Foundation has various fellowships for individuals that want to work in the 'sandbox region' of India. They are partnered with Ashoka and have identified nine key issues in the region and if you propose a solution they will fund you to travel to India and implement the project with your team. They also have shorter term and area specific opportunities. It is an interesting blend of funding for start-up social enterprises and travel abroad experiences.

Job: Policy and Advocacy Manager for Campus Progress

Campus Progress

Deadline: ASAP

The Deal:  Campus Progress is affiliated with the Center for American Progress and is focused on training, developing and raising the next generation of progressive leaders. They help young people's voices get heard through activism, journalism, events and a whole range of programs that are worth reading about. This position is a networking and coalition building position tied to real grassroots organizing. You will manage four others and require a bachelors degree and three years experience in the advocacy world. It all happens in Washington.

Funding: Alberta Environment Project Grants

Alberta Eco Trust

Deadline: Rolling

The Deal:  If you are a young person  (16-29) and have an idea for an environmental project in Alberta then the Alberta Eco Trust's grant program called Young Environmental Stewards will give you $5000 dollars to make it happen. They have been given $100,000 over two years by Trans Alta and they need to give it away. The application is pretty simple, so get an idea, get some friends together and apply.

Job: Executive Director, The Funding Exchange

The Deal: The Funding Exchange is a network of 16 public foundations that have committed to funding social justice work. [One of their members is one of our favorites and is also looking for board and funding partner members--- the Haymarket Peoples Fund] The network of members of the Funding Exchange give out nearly $15 million dollars a year as a collective to grassroots organizations. They are based in New York and they are looking for a new Executive Director. If you have social justice background and have had experience managing an organization then you should apply.

The Deal: Apathy is Boring is looking to recruit two individuals who are excited to help get people involved in the democratic process. They are looking for one recently 'uninvolved' youth between the ages of 18-25 and one individual who has a significant experience in the area of fiscal management. Applicants should also be bilingual. Apathy is Boring uses art and technology to involve youth in democracy.

Conference: American/Chinese Exhange @ Stanford

Forum for American/Chinese Exchange at Stanford (FACES)

Deadline: January 4, 2010

The Deal: The American/Chinese Exchange at Stanford brings 40 future leaders of the US and China to speak with current world leaders which in the past has included Condoleeza Rice and John Major among others.  Students will get to participate in a conference that is held in Stanford for a week and then in China for the next week and then enter an alumni network of over 700 leaders in China/American relations. Half of delegates are subsidized to attend.
